GP Council Continues work on Public Safety

Grants Pass CityWith Josephine County funding shortfalls making news as far east as the New York Times last week the City of Grants Pass remains in a tricky place…a Municipality with a fully funded Police and Public Safety Department surrounded by a County that lacks deputies, prosecutors, and jail space to deal with criminal behavior. A May ballot levy to bolster County Public Safety efforts was again voted down by citizens, leaving the City and County to try and figure out how best to go forward safely.

That was the main topic of the Grants Pass City Council Workshop Monday, July 8 as Public Safety Director Joe Henner briefed the Council on plans to lease some jail space to the County to help keep the most dangerous behind bars and the framework of what an agreement would look like. The Monday Council workshops are now televised live and replay 4 times after the fact each week. You can catch the July 8 replay tonight at 7pm, Wednesday at 4pm, Thursday at 8pm, and Saturday at 3pm. Each week’s Workshop is also archived on the City of Grants Pass website, to catch up on this important topic just click here.
