REAL TV, REAL PEOPLE: Watch RVTV's Government & Public Access archives for authentic local television from Southern Oregon
SPRING STUDIO CERTIFICATION WORKSHOPS BEGIN APR. 26
The spring quarter is upon us and we’re starting up another round of Studio Production Certification Workshops – this is the class YOU need if you want to get involved in one of the shows currently in production during Public Access Saturdays, or if you want to create your own LIVE or recorded studio shows for broadcast on cable and on the web!
These workshops cost $25 and are held on staggered Friday from 6-8 p.m.; in between each workshop, attendees are expected to volunteer on two Public Access studio productions in order to get hands-on training and build the teamwork needed to make our Public Access program successful.
April 26, 6-8 p.m. Introduction to the Studio Environment
May 10, 6-8 p.m. Introduction to the Control Room
May 24, 6-8 p.m. Introduction to Directing
June 14, 6-8 p.m. Capstone: Final LIVE Production
We strongly encourage attendees to sign up now by calling Charles at (541) 552-6898 or e-mailing douglasc@sou.edu to secure your space. Please only sign up if you intend to take all four workshops, as you will not be certified otherwise.
INDEPENDENT MEDIA WEEK IS HERE!
For the 9th year running, citizens from across the Rogue Valley are coming together to celebrate the value of independent media outlets. All of us at RVTV are proud of our role in providing our local community with the resources needed to give a voice to those who otherwise go unheard in our region.
We were pleased to see over 50 local residents turn out for our Open House at the Digital Media Center last night; we’re looking forward to bringing many new volunteers on board with a diverse set of skills and interests. We met folks interested in studio shows, field productions, fundraising, and even just helping out around the office! With these new contacts, this newsletter now reaches over 300 community members who care about public access media. If you know someone who would like to plug into this info stream and receive this newsletter every week, please ask them e-mail douglasc@sou.edu.
Our “How To Access Local Indy Media” panel excited the interest of newspaper reporters, radio show hosts and a number of RVTV television producers; the potential for cross-pollination and the sharing of content in print, audio, video and on-line formats will be realized in the months ahead!
Concluding Indy Media Week with a band is our keynote speaker, Mickey Huff, the director of Project Censored, which puts out ‘The Top 25 Censored Stories’ every year in cooperation with universities across the country. This special keynote event “Uncensored” will be at the Meese Auditorium at the SOU Art Complex at 7 p.m. Friday, with doors opening at 6:30. As with all Independent Media Week events, it’s free and open to the community.
RVTV is also hosting a “State of Independent Media 2013” LIVE 90-minute broadcast on Saturday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. over Community Access Channel 15. Joining us at the studio will be Project Censored director and Diablo Valley College communications professor Mickey Huff, SOU journalism instructor D.L. Richardson, KSKQ operations manager Carson Bench, Rogue Valley Community Press writer Kristi Wright and Rogue IMC co-coordinator Jason Houk. This distinguished collection of media makers will speak to the future of local journalism and how community anchor institutions like RVTV can play a vital role in bridging the digital divide and filling the gaps in local news, cultural and educational programming. Please spread the word!
A NOTE ABOUT SERIES SCHEDULING
As ever, we have our latest RVTV Channel 15 series schedule posted at rvtv.sou.edu and we encourage your enthusiasm for keeping your shows on the air and producing new episodes.
Our increasing viewership and public access production activity has its impacts on our limited station resources, however. We’ve had a number of producers who’ve insisted upon an intricate playback schedule for their episodes, sometimes just a couple of hours or a couple of days in advance of their timeslot.
While RVTV staff does its best to accommodate programs related to special events and time-sensitive news & information, we would like producers to understand that we try to schedule our channels well ahead of time. We simply do not have the resources to constantly make last-minute schedule changes.
Please understand that scheduling requests are just that – requests; we’d also ask you to make such requests at least two weeks in advance. The only exceptions to this advance timeframe will be in relation to locally-produced programs that are new, that are actually time-sensitive, and that actually relate to real-world news or local events.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE NOTES
Equipment check-out is on Fridays from 3pm to 6pm. Producers are highly encouraged to reserve the equipment they need IN ADVANCE. To do so, please e-mail Charles Douglas at douglasc@sou.edu or call (541) 552-6898.
Due to increased demand, RVTV Public Access is running LIVE studio shows the first and third Fridays of the month between 6-8 p.m. (crew call at 5 p.m.). We will also now have THREE studio production timeslots between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the Saturdays we are open, these being 8-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 2-5 p.m.

As you may have noticed, we are expanding our advance listing of crewmembers to make sure producers have lined up sufficient support from our RVTV Public Access crew pool; if you are having trouble finding volunteers, that probably means you need to be volunteering more yourself on other people’s shows!
If you would like to be contacted to Direct or crew for any programs, please contact Brandon ( givensb@sou.edu ) or Charles ( douglasc@sou.edu ) so that we can put Producers in contact with you. We always need capable Directors and crew wanting to hone their skills!
We are celebrating Independent Media Week like never before, because the challenges have never been greater, so let’s rise up and meet them!
