REAL TV, REAL PEOPLE: Watch RVTV's Government & Public Access archives for authentic local television from Southern Oregon
CANCELLATION NOTICE – JUNE 22, 2013 11AM-2PM TIMESLOT OPEN
In accordance with RVTV Public Access Policy, we have been notified at least one week in advance of a cancellation for a studio production timeslot in our current quarter.
Any Studio-Certified Producer may bid for this timeslot, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, on a first come, first served basis. Call Brandon at 552-6892 or e-mail givensb@sou.edu if you are ready to produce either an hour-long show or two half-hour shows during this timeslot (variations to program length negotiable upon request).
COMING IN JULY: SUMMER OPEN HOUSE & BASIC STUDIO CERTIFICATION WORKSHOPS
As something of a sneak peak, we’d like to let you know about our quarterly Open House and Studio Tour here at the Southern Oregon Digital Media Center: Wednesday, July 10 from 7-9 p.m. will feature an orientation to the facilities of Rogue Valley Community Television within the DMC.
In addition, we will be presenting a free seminar for local Public Access Producers, and those interested in becoming producers, on Social Media, Outreach & Underwriting…more details on this in our next RVTV Newsletter!
Following the DMC Open House on July 10 will be our next round of Studio Production Certification Workshops, which is the series you need to complete if you would like to become a Studio Producer and make your own live our recorded show in our high definition studio. This is the last quarter when they will only cost $25 each – so don’t wait any longer to get certified!
The basic studio certification sessions will be held on the second and fourth Friday evenings during the next two months, on July 12 & 26 and August 9 & 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. Pre-payment guarantees your seat, just make arrangements with Charles at 552-6898 or douglasc@sou.edu. Current producers may re-take the workshops free of charge if space is available. For more information, please visit https://rvtv.wpengine.com/studio-certification/.
SUMMER QUARTER STUDIO PRODUCTION TIMES SET!
Thanks and salutations to the local producers and producers-to-be who attended our Quarterly Meeting last week. The entire RVTV Staff is really thrilled at the recent growth of our active Studio Producer community – and the motto of “Producers Helping Producers” is really starting to kick into gear!
Just comparing the hours volunteered by Producers helping on the Public Access Productions of other Producers, the results show a 75% increase!
Mutual Volunteer Hours, Winter Quarter 2013: 197
Mutual Volunteer Hours, Spring Quarter 2013: 346
As part of our campaign to encourage mutual support, we’ve inaugurated something special: The Awesome Award.
Yes, it’s awesome – because there’s no other word to describe the number one studio volunteer for each quarter.
We gave an Awesome Award ‘ex post facto’ to Michael D. Fox for being the Top Studio Volunteer in Winter Quarter 2013…and for Spring Quarter, the Awesome Award goes to none other than Dean Walker, our most prolific Studio Director!
As our Awesome Awardee with 48 volunteer studio hours (and that doesn’t count his new show in production, ‘Presence’), Dean got the first pick at a studio production timeslot for the Summer Quarter.
In addition, we’ve expanded our recognition of the other Top Volunteers, since these are the folks who make our Public Access program so successful. Our other Top Studio Volunteers for Spring ’13 are Michael D. Fox (33 hours), Moon Dust (30 hours), Bob Schropp (30 hours) and Peggy Siders (21 hours). As the top five volunteers, these producers (plus Dean) were seeded ‘one’ through ‘five’ in our lottery system for studio timeslot selection – and this was in addition to an EXTRA timeslot awarded off the top to these producers. As promised, we are making sure the additional incentives provided to our producers go directly to the people putting in the work.
Also due for Honorable Mention for their volunteer service are Joseph Kauth, John Stoeckl & Michael Rhoades. Thanks to everyone who contributed to each other’s success, and remember the counter starts back at zero if you’d like to get in the running for Top Volunteer recognition this Fall; RVTV staff will keep cooking up incentives to encourage your continuing support!
(Conversely, there are studio producers who produce their studio shows and are otherwise never seen helping out others in the studio. You know who you are…and although we’re not the NSA, we are tracking volunteer hours, so we know who you are too. Please consider the needs of your fellow producers and pitch in to help out on their shows now and then too – at some point in the future this may become a requirement for you to continue bidding for timeslots.)
Although we had a couple of cancellations, we are giving Friday night live studio shows one more chance this quarter to see if there is sufficient interest in the RVTV Producer community to continue offering this opportunity. If these Friday timeslots are not 100% utilized, they may be discontinued as of Fall Quarter. These LIVE studio shows are the first and third Fridays of the month between 5-8 p.m. (and yes, that does mean crew call, including producers, is at 5 p.m.). This can be for two half-hour shows at 6:30 & 7 p.m., or for a single hour-long show at 6:30 p.m.
We are encouraged by your feedback on the recent change from two to three Saturday studio production timeslots; these will continue to be at 8-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. RVTV Staff urges you to be courteous to other producers and do not exceed the timeslot you have bid for; failure to do so may result in cancellation of future timeslots and suspension of bids in the following quarter.
Please get ahold of these producers IN ADVANCE if you would like to volunteer in the productions of their programs (and let RVTV staff know too). Without further adieu, here are the Summer Quarter studio production timeslots:

SUMMER FIELD PRODUCTION WORKSHOPS COMING UP
For those of you who weren’t able to join us this Spring, we have another opportunity for you to take our basic field production certification workshop series!
Becoming a Field-Certified Producer means you are able to check out cameras, tripods, microphones and more from RVTV for use in your film productions out and about in the Rogue Valley. Our only requirement is that you use this equipment to make programs that are properly submitted to appear on RVTV Community Access Channel 15 in a timely manner. Field Certification is also required to make use of the Public Access Edit Lab.
Going above and beyond the call of duty, RVTV Mentor David Bruce has agreed to teach all four Field Production workshops this summer; David is without a doubt our most prolific field producer, shooting everything from live music to inspirational talk shows to protests in the streets of Medford! RVTV Staff will also be on hand to check out field equipment and get the ball rolling on your editing process.
These workshops all take place in the DMC Classroom from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on successive Saturdays (June 22, July 6, July 13 and August 3). All four must be taken in succession to become certified. Additionally, participants will be developing proposals for a Public Service Announcement or a short film (2 to 5 minutes) on the subject of their choice. These will be filmed and edited between July 14 and August 2, and final projects will be featured on RVTV both on cable and on-line!
Workshops are just $25 each, and pre-payment for the workshop series will guarantee your seat in the class. This is the last quarter when the basic field certification series will be offered at this price – so don’t wait any longer! Currently certified Field Producers may re-take the FPCW series for free, but only if space is available. To sign up or to find out more information, contact Brandon at givensb@sou.edu or (541) 552-6892. Additional details can be found at rvtv.sou.edu/field-certification/.
PUBLIC ACCESS ADVISORY BOARD WORKS TO PROTECT RVTV FUNDING
The RVTV Public Access Advisory Board, which represents your interests in preserving and protecting public access media in the Rogue Valley, represented you all in a statement read by member Joyce Segers at a recent Jackson County Board of Commissioners meeting, which you can view here: http://cvp.telvue.com/player?id=T01550&chapter=46455
Thanks in part to the good work of Joyce and the PAAB in advocating on your behalf, RVTV has been granted a six-month extension in its contract with Jackson County, which includes funding for public access on Channel 15 as well as for the cablecast, webcast and on-demand streaming of all Jackson County government meetings on Channel 14 (not to mention the Ask The Commissioners and Jackson County Close Up studio shows broadcast live on Channel 9).
While the news is a relief, this is only a temporary reprieve and RVTV is not out of the woods yet, as Commissioners are looking to put an item on the November ballot to levy a fee to pay for certain county services. If this fee fails, so might county funding for public, education and government access TV services, and your Public Access Advisory Board is planning accordingly.
This includes making Public Access a more self-sustaining initiative with updated user fees, as well as seeking grant funding opportunities as they arise. A new Visioning and Branding Committee has also formed thanks to RVTV Mentor Dean Walker to provide community access with a future focus.
YOUR input is needed if the important work of the Public Access Advisory Board is to succeed – we have a vacancy open to any resident of Southern Oregon who wishes to contribute their efforts. Contact Brandon (givensb@sou.edu) or Charles (douglasc@sou.edu) for an application.

As you may have noticed, we are expanding our advance listing of crewmembers to make sure producers have lined up sufficient support from our RVTV Public Access crew pool; if you are having trouble finding volunteers, that probably means you need to be volunteering more yourself on other people’s shows!
If you would like to be contacted to Direct or crew for any programs, please contact Brandon (givensb@sou.edu) or Charles (douglasc@sou.edu) so that we can put Producers in contact with you. We always need capable Directors and crew wanting to hone their skills!
